Introduction to Macrame

Macrame is a form of textile art that uses cord and knots to create a whole range of items. This age-old technique has come back into popularity lately and it’s no surprise why!

Not only can macrame knots be quickly turned into a beautiful piece of art, but they can create simple and practical everyday objects for next to nothing, and in next to no time.

The process itself is also incredibly relaxing and therapeutic, keeping your mind and hands engaged as you create something useful out of very little.

In this article, you can expect to find a wide range of macrame patterns, from popular wall hangings, to less popular but equally beautiful garden chairs and even jewelry.

I’ve also included a few of the basic knots at the end of the roundup. If you want to skip past the projects to familiarise yourself with them first.

I hope you find a fun project that inspires you to get creative in this roundup!

Macrame Supplies and Materials

One of the most beautiful things about macrame is that you don’t need much at all to create something beautiful.

You can create simple projects with just your hands and some cord!

Macrame cord comes in a HUGE array of colors and sizes, but the most popular tends to be plain cream cord.

The size is based on the thickness of the cord. They range from 1mm to 6+mm in thickness, and the type you choose will depend on what you are making.

For intricate designs and jewelry, you’ll want to use a thinner cord. Whereas for wall hangings or larger macrame pieces, you’ll most likely want to use a thicker cord.

Basic Knot Techniques for Your Macrame Projects

This is a great beginner tutorial to learn the basic knots if you are looking for somewhere to start. It covers all the basic knots, plus a few more:

Larks Head Knot

This is the base knot for most projects, and it’s how you attach the cord to your rod, piece of wood, or whatever you’re using for the base of your project.

Fold your cord in half, and place the loop you’ve made under the rod. Bring the loop over the top of the rod, pull the two ends of the cord through, and then tighten the knot.

Square Knot

Start with two larks head knots, side by side.

Step one is taking the left cord and place it over the two middle cords, and under the cord on the right.

Pick up the orginal right cord, and pass in under the two middle cords again and through the loop on the left.

Pull the two outer cords to create a knot.

Step two is to repeat this, but start from the other side this time (from the right hand side cord) and you will have a sqaure knot.

This sounds complicated, but watching the video above will show you it’s not that complicated!

Spiral Knot

This knot is also known as the half square knot. It is quite literally the same as the half sqaure knot, but instead of going onto step two, you keep repeating step one to create a spiral!

Wrap Knot

This knot makes a great start or finish to a project, and is also known as the gathering knot.

Make a U shape with your cord, and place it against your project. Either at the top or the bottom depending on where you’re using the knot.

Use the rest of the working cord to wrap around your project. Pull it tight and make sure you don’t overlap or leave any gaps as you go.

When you have the number of wraps you want, pull the working end through the bottom of the u-shaped loop.

Then, pull the end sticking up out of the top, until the bottom loop closes up, and cut off the top end nice and close to the binding.
